Obituary
Eva Manning

Greensboro, North Carolina

Age 81.
Died 09/20/2024.

Eva Manning
Eva van Greevenbroek Manning, aged 81, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, September 20, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and with her beloved dogs at her side.

Eva was born on June 3, 1943, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Hendricus and Everada van Greenbroek, both dedicated educators. Following in the footsteps of a long line of teachers, Eva attended the University of Utrecht where she gained her candidacy in English. At the age of twenty, she took a year off from college to work as an au pair in Hawaii. On her first day there, while walking along the beach of Waikiki.,she met a soldier named Bob, who as luck would have it, was stationed nearby. Eva and Bob soon fell in love, were married, and then moved to North Carolina, where they created a beautiful life together, raising their family and building their own business.

In 1970 they settled into the house they built on Cascade Drive, where Eva created a warm and welcoming home for 54 years. A wonderful cook and a gracious hostess, her dinner table was always the heart of family time. One of her biggest joys was having her family around her during Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners at a table that stretched the length of two rooms.

As a loyal friend and neighbor, she loved hosting gatherings, whether it was a summer fish-fry, or her annual ‘Souper’ party for her neighborhood. Eva cherished her friendships.

In addition to their home in Greensboro, Eva and Bob also built a house at High Rock Lake, where lifelong family memories were made: Boating, skiing, eating ice cream at Jenny’s, fishing, hunting arrowheads, and countless games of canasta - it was a house filled with laughter and love.

No matter the location, Eva made sure to create family traditions with her family, such as celebrating New Year’s Eve with home-made hats and secretly adjusted clocks, or reading books for hours and hours (and hours) to her children and then grandchildren. Eva took great pride in her Dutch heritage, which she passed along to her children through a mix of stories of her childhood, family gatherings with Dutch cousins, and frequent evenings eating traditional Dutch treats like bitterballen, Dutch cheeses, poffertjes and stroopwafels. She loved her home country, and got immense joy in cheering on the Netherlands National Football team (Hup,Holland,Hup!) and celebrating Sinterklaas Day with her local Dutch Club.

If you dropped by Cascade for a visit, you would often find Eva sitting beside the koi pond or under the covered porch reading. A life-long avid reader, Eva was a faithful member of her beloved book club PAGES (Pam, Alice, Gayle, Eva, and Sandy) for over 40 years.

When she wasn’t at home, it was a good bet you could find Eva at the Bog Garden walking the dogs with Bob, where they both delighted in the abundance of wildlife… they especially loved spotting the owls. Her love of nature was reflected in her yard, where she and Bob created an oasis, complete with Koi pond, a hidden garden, gorgeous landscaping and hardscaping, along with endless bird feeders, potted flowers and herbs, ultimately growing the yard into a certified wildlife habitat.

We will all miss Eva’s strength, her sense of humor, her thousand megawatt smile, and her unconditional love.

Eva is preceded in death by both parents, her brother Henk, and sister Martine.

Eva is survived by her husband Bob Manning, their four children: Keith Manning of Bell Canyon, CA, Bart Manning of Greensboro, NC, Maria M Duehring of Greensboro, NC, and Michelle Manning of Wilmington, NC ; her sister Marja Nix of Amerrongen,NL; her brother Bart van Greevenbroek of Nieuwegein,NL; her six grandchildren: Sarah, Mack, Ava, Colton, Lila and Keira; and her six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the National Audobon Society and/or the Jimmy V Foundation (for cancer research).

A Celebration of Life is being planned for later this Fall, and details will be forthcoming.

Immediate Burial

$2497.50

An immediate burial has the same end result as a traditional burial; however, we have eliminated the extra (sometimes unnecessary) services prior to getting to the cemetery. Not everyone wants an open casket for viewing or a limousine for the family. Despite the term immediate, we can move as fast as you need or as slow as you like. This option simply allows you to save money by eliminating some of the fancy extras at the funeral home.

Traditional Funeral

$6081.48

We offer the same traditional funeral services as the big corporately owned funeral homes in the area; however, we cost about half the amount. You might consider a traditional funeral service if your family is looking for an open casket visitation, a traditional church service or a funeral service in the funeral home's chapel. A traditional funeral service can be altered to fit the needs of your family.

Green Burial

$3033.75

This establishment is one of a select number of funeral homes who meet the criteria for providing green funeral service by the Green Burial Council; a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization working to encourage environmentally sustainability in the field of funeral service. Our Green options allow for a funeral to take place without the use of toxic and non-biodegradable materials/chemicals.

Aquamation

$2640.59

As an alternative to traditional cremation, City of Oaks Funeral Home also offers Aquamation. The Aquamation process, often referred to as alkaline hydrolysis, uses a solution of water and potassium hydroxide to facilitate natural decomposition.
