Obituary
George Irving Sherman

Raleigh, North Carolina

Age 79.
Died 09/12/2023.

George Irving Sherman
On September 12, 2023, George Irving Sherman died at age 79 and went to be with his Lord and Savior. He was born on August 2, 1944 in High Point, NC. George had a happy childhood playing with his two sisters and his brother. They had free rein of the neighborhood to ride bikes and play roll-a-bat and kick ball. He loved to tell stories about his childhood, especially about the two paper routes he delivered every day before school, even in the snow and ice. In high school, George enjoyed playing baritone sax in a dance band and having lots of adventures, such as driving with his best friend to Florida arriving on his seventeenth birthday. After graduating from High Point Central High School in 1962, he went to East Carolina University where he had many good times at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house. He was Vice President and one of the crew that built the “Party House.” It was during this time that he met Anne Bryant on a blind date. Even though he took her to a drag race on their first date, they were happily married for 55 years. After graduating from East Carolina, he received a Master’s degree from The College of William and Mary.

George had a varied career including being a fifth-grade teacher, elementary school principal, school fundraiser, college logo merchandiser, and finally the manager of a law firm. He worked hard, but building relationships with the people he worked with was always more important to him than the work itself.

He loved his family and was quick to tell them and show them how much he cared. George was a supportive dad to his two sons and encouraged them to follow their dreams. He was so proud of the men they have become. George was thrilled to become a Papa and enjoyed spending time with his precious granddaughters. He was a master pancake maker famous for creating pancakes of every color and design.

He was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending the day fishing, hunting, or clearing paths on the family farm near Scotland Neck, NC. George appreciated God’s beautiful creation and loved sharing it with friends and family. If you were around him for more than a few minutes, he would show you pictures of fish he caught.

As an adult, George’s faith became very important to him. He had various leadership roles at church, but he felt that his most important work was with the youth. He spent many years teaching youth in Sunday School and going on youth mission trips. Some of his happiest days were spent working with teenagers while repairing homes. He loved being around young people and helping them grow in their faith. He wanted them to know how much Jesus loves them.

George was an affectionate, tender hearted, and thoughtful man. He cared deeply about his friends. He enjoyed having a hearty laugh with them, but he was also there to offer a word of support when they were going through hard times. He was very grateful for the prayers, love, and support of his many friends, especially during these last two years.

George is survived by his wife, Anne Bryant Sherman; his son, Frank Welborn Sherman and wife Katie, and granddaughters, Lily, Anna, and Willa; his son John Bryant Sherman and wife Ellen. He is also survived by his sister, Starr Lewis and husband Larry; his sister, Mary Dillard and husband Odell; his sister-in-law Jaunitta Sherman; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Suezi Long; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Hope Bryant; and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Roxie Sherman, and his brother Johnny Sherman.

A service celebrating George’s life will be held at 2:00 pm, on September 16, at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 100 Peace Street in Raleigh, NC. A reception will immediately follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in George’s name to Holy Trinity Anglican Church, (Church Office) 549 North Blount Street, Raleigh, NC 27604 https://htcraleigh.org or to With Love From Jesus, P.O. Box 37713, Raleigh, NC 27627.

Immediate Burial

$2497.50

An immediate burial has the same end result as a traditional burial; however, we have eliminated the extra (sometimes unnecessary) services prior to getting to the cemetery. Not everyone wants an open casket for viewing or a limousine for the family. Despite the term immediate, we can move as fast as you need or as slow as you like. This option simply allows you to save money by eliminating some of the fancy extras at the funeral home.

icon
Traditional Funeral

$6081.48

We offer the same traditional funeral services as the big corporately owned funeral homes in the area; however, we cost about half the amount. You might consider a traditional funeral service if your family is looking for an open casket visitation, a traditional church service or a funeral service in the funeral home's chapel. A traditional funeral service can be altered to fit the needs of your family.

Green Burial

$3033.75

This establishment is one of a select number of funeral homes who meet the criteria for providing green funeral service by the Green Burial Council; a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization working to encourage environmentally sustainability in the field of funeral service. Our Green options allow for a funeral to take place without the use of toxic and non-biodegradable materials/chemicals.

Aquamation

$2640.59

As an alternative to traditional cremation, City of Oaks Funeral Home also offers Aquamation. The Aquamation process, often referred to as alkaline hydrolysis, uses a solution of water and potassium hydroxide to facilitate natural decomposition.
